About the BikeBok

Form Follows Function: The Shape of the BikeBok

The unique shape of the BikeBok was determined by its functional design goals: to provide an easily removable weathertight rigid container which straddles the rear wheel of a bicycle when mounted, and to act as roller luggage when off the bike.  Its shape and size were developed to provide the cyclist with usefulness, convenience, and innovative design features that enable the cyclist to carry cargo easily.

-The shape of the BikeBok maximizes the interior volume, in order to maximize the carrying capacity of the space behind the cyclist.

-With the BikeBok mounted on the bike, the top is horizontal, to provide an additional carrying surface. The hinged extension handle, when folded down, can be used as an attachment site for bungee cords.

-The width of the BikeBok progressively narrows from front to rear, and it fills the void behind the cyclist’s legs to reduce aerodynamic drag and turbulence.

-The central wheel well of the BikeBok makes a space that accommodates a variety of wheel sizes.  The wheel well is tapered, in contrast to the rectangular shape of bike racks, to take advantage of space that a rectangular rack would waste.

-The molded handle is large and sturdy, designed for comfortable one-handed lifting of a loaded BikeBok.

Innovative Design:

-The central positioning of the BikeBok at the rear of the bicycle provides for balancing of the load. The shape and the position of its front surface avoid heel strikes, bumps, or other interference with leg motions of the cyclist.

-The width, which does not extend beyond the cyclist, permits safe passage through narrow alleys and around obstructions.

-The lid’s rim incorporates a sturdy ledge which provides strength and acts as a bumper to resist damage if the container falls or is struck.

-The decorative side ridges and the lid’s rim deflect rainwater and splashes, protecting the contents of the BikeBok.

-The overall rigid construction of the BikeBok protects its cargo.
